Pentney Building Sand

Our washed Pentney building sand is a light-coloured, fine 0-2mm sand, perfect for making mortar. It’s commonly used in lime mortar mixes, providing a smooth and durable finish.

Caistor Dry-Screened Building Sand

This dry-screened sand has a rich ginger colour and a fine 0-2mm texture, making it ideal for mortar production and general construction work.

Pentney Sharp Sand

Sourced from our Pentney quarry, this washed sharp sand has a light colour and a 0-4mm grading. It’s perfect for laying slabs, plastering, and rendering, as it offers excellent stability and finish.

Bilney Sharp Sand

This is a coarse, sharp concreting sand with a deep orange-red colour, graded to 0-4mm. It’s well-suited for laying slabs and screeding, as well as for mixing concrete, as it provides strength and durability.

As-Dug Sandfill

This is a cost-effective backfill material used for utilities, bulk fill, and trench fill. ‘As-dug’ sandfill may contain stones, making it unsuitable for pipework and cable ducts. It’s also not suitable for horse arenas.

Screened Sandfill

A refined version of our ‘as-dug’ sandfill, this material is free from large stones, making it suitable for use around cable ducts and piping. However, it’s not suitable for horse arenas.

What is Building Sand?

Building sand is a fine, soft sand commonly used in construction for brick laying, plastering and making mortar. It has small, smooth particles that help create a workable and flexible mix, making it easy to spread and shape.

This type of sand is used in cement and water mixtures to bond bricks and blocks together. It’s also ideal for rendering walls and creating a smooth finish. Additionally, it’s available in different colours, such as light yellow or reddish tones, depending on your requirements.

What is Sharp Sand?

Sharp sand, also known as grit sand or coarse sand, has larger, rougher grains than building sand. It’s commonly used for making concrete, laying paving slabs, and improving soil drainage.

Because of its coarse texture, sharp sand provides strength and stability in mixes, making it ideal for foundations, screeding, and rendering. It also prevents shrinkage and cracking in cement-based applications. Additionally, gardeners often mix it with soil to improve drainage and aeration.

What are the Differences Between Building Sand and Sharp Sand?

Building sand and sharp sand have different textures and uses, making them suitable for specific construction and landscaping projects.

Building sand has fine, soft particles that create a smooth and workable mix. It’s mainly used for bricklaying, plastering, and making mortar, where flexibility and a smooth finish are needed. This sand binds well with mortar, making it ideal for applications that require a strong yet pliable mixture.

Sharp sand, on the other hand, has larger, rougher grains, giving it a coarser texture. It’s commonly used for making concrete, screeding, and laying paving slabs. Because it improves drainage and adds strength, it’s also useful in soil mixes for gardening.

The main difference is that building sand is finer and more flexible, while sharp sand is coarser and better for stability. You need to choose the right type of sand depending on your project’s need and the finish you’re looking for.

Where Can You Use Construction Sand?

Sand is a versatile material used in construction and landscaping, as well as many home improvement projects. Here are some common ways you can use sand:

Sand in Construction: Builders use bulk sharp sand in concrete, mortar, and asphalt to create strong and durable structures. Building sand is essential for laying bricks and making cement but can also be used when you’re preparing surfaces for paving.

Sand in Landscaping: Construction sand is popular in garden design and is often used for pathways and decorative areas or even drainage solutions. You can also use sand to improve soil quality by preventing compaction and aiding water flow.

Sand in Home Improvement: From levelling patios to filling gaps in block paving, our construction sand has many uses across a wide variety of DIY projects.

No matter the project, sand is a valuable and widely used material. Check out our sand aggregates to find the best options for your needs.

Why Sand?

Sand can be a valuable material when it comes to construction and many other industries. Here are some of its key benefits:

Strength and Stability: Sharp sand is an important ingredient in concrete and mortar, helping to create strong and long-lasting structures. It provides stability in foundations, roads, and buildings.

Drainage: Sand improves drainage in gardens and construction projects, preventing water buildup and reducing the risk of flooding.

Versatility: Sand aggregates have many uses, from making cement and filling gaps in paving to improving conditions in sports fields and enhancing children’s play areas.

Cost-Effective: Compared to other materials, building sand is an affordable and widely available resource. Its low cost makes it ideal for large-scale projects.

How To Correctly Lay Sand

Laying sand properly is important for a strong and stable surface. Whether you’re preparing for paving or a gardening project, these simple steps will help you get the best results.

Prepare the Area: You can start by clearing the area of any debris, weeds, or loose soil. If needed, you can dig out the ground to the required depth.

Create a Solid Base: For projects like paving, you’ll need to add a layer of crushed stone or gravel before spreading sand. This will help with drainage and prevent the paving material from shifting over time.

Spread the Sand Evenly: Once the base is ready, pour the construction sand over the prepared surface and use a rake to spread it evenly. Aim for a smooth, level layer.

Compact the Sand: You’ll need to use a tamper or plate compactor to press the building sand down, making it firm and stable. If needed, add more sand and repeat the process.

Check the Level: You’ll then need to use a straight board or a levelling tool to ensure the sand is even. Make sure to adjust it as necessary to avoid dips or high spots.

Apply the Final Surface: Once the sand aggregate is level and compact, lay paving stones or other materials on top.
