Subbases have many applications in construction, ranging from roads and pavements to driveways and roadways. Let’s take a look at all our subbase aggregates and how you can use them for your projects:
Type 1 Granite
As one of the widely used primary aggregates in the UK, type 1 granite is often a preferable choice for roadway construction. It’s processed to a Ministry of Transport type 1 specification and is generally considered superior to other type 1 materials, like crushed concrete, due to its reliability.
Graded Hoggin
Graded hoggin is processed using a combination of sand, clay, and gravel, making for a well-balanced material. Its ideal use as a subbase is for constructing capping layers, oversights, or driveways. The graded hoggin that we process in our Norfolk quarry is available at 0-75mm grading for all your landscaping projects.
Screened Asphalt Planings
If you prefer asphalt that has been recycled and processed into a reusable material, then screened asphalt planings are the best recycled aggregate for you. They’re acquired from road resurfacing projects and are suitable for driveways, compounds, or farm track reinstatement. Our recycled planings are screened at 60mm down to dust.
Crushed Asphalt
Another recycled aggregate that’s best used for landscaping is crushed asphalt. This is an eco-friendly material that’s ideal for farm track restoration, parking lots, pavements, and gravel roads. Our crushed asphalt, sourced from demolition works, is graded at 60mm (including dust), with a 40mm grade available occasionally depending on supply.
Crushed Brick
Brick rubble is a byproduct of construction demolition and can be reused for other projects, extending its lifespan. We crush and screen brick rubble and grade it to a 6F5 specification, making it optimal for regular use in capping layers, backfills, or haul roads.
Crushed Concrete
Crushed concrete is a widely used subbase material in East Anglia due to our reliance on a high percentage of recycled materials. Obtained from demolition work, our broken concrete is crushed, screened, and graded to 0-60mm. It’s commonly used in foundation layers, industrial yards, road and pavement construction, and drainage systems.

Aggregates Calculator
This calculator will help you to work out how much of our product you need for your project. The calculator assumes the area that you are going use is rectangular. If you need to work out an area of a different shape, try breaking the area down into several rectangles, work out the total for each rectangle out then add up the results.
*Please note for Buff Limestone use 6-14mm Gravel to calculate.
Where Can You Use Subbase?
Subbase aggregates play a key role in supporting the stability of many construction and landscaping projects. Here are some of their common applications:
Subbase in Road Construction: Subbase is commonly used in road construction as a strong foundation layer. Its strength helps distribute vehicle load evenly across the road, preventing cracks or surface damage.
Subbase in Driveways and Pavements: Driveways and pavements require a solid base to withstand heavy traffic and prevent sinking. Subbase aggregates work best for these areas due to their durability.
Subbase in Landscaping: For garden pathways, patios, and outdoor seating areas, subbase aggregates help create a strong, even surface. These will keep your landscaping projects intact for decades to come.
Subbase in Farm Tracks: Heavy machinery is often used on farm tracks for transporting materials and harvesting crops. Subbase will provide you with a resilient foundation for withstanding their load and frequent traffic.
Subbase in Drainage Systems: Subbase also helps with drainage by preventing water buildup and reducing soil erosion. It keeps water flowing efficiently and maintains the stability of the surrounding areas.
Subbase is a strong aggregate that has many useful applications, making it ideal for use in long-lasting projects. Check out our subbase range to find the perfect aggregate for your next project today.
Why Subbase?
Subbase provides a fundamental layer for many construction and landscaping projects. Here are some of its key benefits:
Provides Structural Support: Subbase creates a strong foundation by distributing the load from the surface evenly across the ground. This prevents shifting and sinking, giving long-term stability for your construction projects.
Reduces Maintenance Costs: Due to their durability, subbase aggregates can minimise the need for frequent repairs and maintenance. As a result, you can keep your long-term costs low.
Versatility: Subbase is suitable for a wide range of applications, including road construction, landscaping, drainage systems, and farm track reinstatements. Its adaptability makes it a reliable choice for both residential and commercial projects.
Load-Bearing Capacity: By evenly distributing weight and pressure, subbase aggregates enhance the load-bearing capacity of the surface, making it suitable for heavy traffic and machinery.
Eco-Friendly Option: Using recycled subbase aggregates reduces waste and the need for fresh materials. It also helps conserve natural resources, making it an environmentally responsible choice for your projects.

How to Correctly Lay Subbase?
Laying the subbase properly is essential for ensuring that your surface remains stable and durable. This is meant as a guide only please adhere to specific instructions from site plans and design/construction engineers where applicable.
To achieve a subbase that supports your project for years, follow these steps:
Prepare the site: Using a shovel or machinery, clear the construction area of any vegetation, debris, or other materials that could interfere with your laying process.
Grade and level the ground: To allow for proper drainage, create a slight slope on the surface for water to flow efficiently.
Spread the Subbase Evenly: Spread them evenly over the ground, so the material covers the entire area to the required depth.
Compact the Subbase: Use a plate compactor to compact the material in layers of about 50mm to 75mm at a time for maximum stability. Check the surface for levelness using a spirit or laser level and make adjustments as necessary.
Apply the Final Surface: Your subbase should now be firm and stable enough to support the final layer (paving stones, tarmac, or other surface finishes).
